General Mills is sweet on honey in 2015

This month, General Mills started unveiling many of its more than 50 new products for its 2015 lineup. The Minneapolis-based company’s new products focused on a variety of emerging food trends.

With more consumers placing value on better-for-you options, gluten-free offerings and high protein foods, General Mills took these demands and created flavorful, innovative products with simple ingredients. “I’m very excited about the quality of our new products. We’ve deeply engaged with our consumers and we’re creating foods that meet their needs,” says General Mills’ Jeff Harmening, executive vice president and chief operating officer, U.S. Retail.

Culinary trends that have us buzzing

With honey being named 2015’s flavor of the year, it’s important to take a peek at other culinary trends that complement honey’s sweetness.

Because honey is such a versatile ingredient, many trends in various categories can be improved with the addition of honey. In 2015, many consumers are looking for ways to manage and improve their health, without sacrificing taste. These trends make it easy for consumers to make better food choices that are still flavorful. Here are some key trends in 2015 and some delicious Made with Honey products that capitalize on each trend.

1. Natural is key

The word “all natural” is a major force behind consumers who want to eat better-for-you products. Made by bees and untouched by any additional ingredients, it doesn’t get much more natural than honey!

This 100% all-natural mustard is comprised of smoked chipotle puree, honey, grainy mustard and a squeeze of fresh lime. The spread is perfect to enjoy with other natural whole foods and snacks like avocado or as a marinade on beef or chicken.

2. High protein

Protein is yet another highly sought after trend to assist consumers in making better food choices. Dairy products and snack bars dominate this trend not only because many are packed with protein, but because they are also easy and convenient on-the-go choices. Many dairy products and protein bars make use of honey as a natural sweetener and flavor masker to boost typically bland protein flavors.

As the official energy bar of the Ironman Triathlon Series, Bonk Breaker Almond and Honey Energy Bars are sweetened with honey and boast 8g of protein in each bar. The bars are also gluten-, dairy- and soy-free.

Sweetened with honey and packed with a walloping 26g of protein, Core Power’s Honey 26g is great for consumers and athletes looking for a boost of energy.

3. Sweetener swap

Many shoppers are opting out of buying products with added sugars. Honey plays the perfect role as an all-natural sweetener, and because honey boasts many different varieties and flavors, it’s used in a wide array of foods.

This premium beverage is enriched with key vitamins and nutrients and is naturally flavored and sweetened with clover honey. All In Beverages, creator of A-GAME, focuses on addressing concerns including energy, nutrition and hydration.

Made completely out of honey, these hard candy spoons can be enjoyed on their own or in a hot cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or apple cider. The spoons come in a variety of flavors all made with honey including lavender honey and honey with lemon.

Lola Granola Bar Keeps its Products Simple and Finds Success

Lola Granola Bar Keeps its Products Simple and Finds Success

What started out as a way to feed a family has turned into a way to feed people throughout the United States.

Mary Molina of Lola Granola Bar recently talked with about the start of Lola Granola Bar and why honey is an integral ingredient in all of the company’s products.

What need did you see unfulfilled in the market that led to the development and launch of Lola Granola?

My family was struggling financially to put food on the table, and when my husband asked for a snack too keep him from eating off of fast-food dollar menus, I could not find anything not made of chemically engineered ingredients. I needed nature’s nutrition. So I grabbed ingredients I had on hand in my pantry, like oats, honey, dried fruit, nuts and seeds.

You use the tag line, “Powered by Oats & Honey” throughout your website and on your products? What is it about these two ingredients that make such a powerful combination?

Oats and honey are a power house combination, especially for people on the go, athletes and kids. First the ingredients are clean nutrition. Honey is easily absorbed by the body for instant energy, and our gluten-free oats are a whole grain complex carbohydrate that is easily metabolized by the body to give you sustained energy over a longer period of time. Plus, trace amounts vitamins and minerals are present in honey: B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and certain amino acids, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.

What taste, functional and marketing benefits does honey bring to your products

Honey is an unprocessed sweetener, and it has been used since the beginning of time. What’s more natural than honey?  It also has natural antibacterial properties.

Currently, what’s your favorite variety of Lola Granola Bar and why?

That’s happens to be a really hard question because each bar is named after my kids and only nephew. Today my favorite is Nathan, because I’m dreaming of warm long summer days returning when blueberries are in season. Now if I’m having a cup of coffee, I like Lola’s Cranberry Almond or Ruby Just Cranberry, but if I want a Greek dessert with my coffee, I grab Ellie’s Date and Cashew. And, on those days when I’m running to soccer and dance, I grab Enzo’s Cashew Almond.

What exciting things do you have planned for 2015?

We are excited to be expanding to all airports in the United States, launching a couple new flavors, and we will be working with more anti-hunger organizations to help end childhood hunger.
