King's Hawaiian Sweetens Product Line

Founded in Hawaii in 1950, King's Hawaiian Bakery has been producing exceptional bread products for U.S. consumers for the last 60 years. Today, the company operates a 160,000-sq.-ft. bakery in Torrance, Calif., and its products can be found in supermarkets and restaurants nationwide.

The company recently answered a few questions from BakingWithHoney.com about the success of its Honey Wheat line. For more information on the bakery, go to www.kingshawaiian.com.

When did you launch the line of Honey Wheat flavored breads and what spurred the decision?

Honey Wheat was first launched in 1986. Then in June of 2002 a full year of extensive market research began on the flavor. The research indicates that King's Hawaiian consumers enjoy wheat products, but tend to shy away from "more textured, grainy offerings," said Mark Taira, CEO and President of King's Hawaiian Bakery. "Consumers in key test markets were delighted with the soft texture and sweet honey flavor of our new Honey Wheat products. It's truly a wheat product the whole family will enjoy."

How does the Honey Wheat line differ from the bakery's traditional line?

Like the Hawaiian Sweet flavor, Honey Wheat is an irresistible original proprietary recipe created by King's Hawaiian, which is made with the finest quality ingredients like wholesome grains and honey for a distinctively sweet taste. The Honey Wheat recipe is available in four varieties:

  • Honey Wheat Round
  • Honey Wheat Rolls 12 pack
  • Honey Wheat Rolls 4 pack
  • Honey Wheat Snacker (Mini Submarine Rolls) in limited distribution

Why is honey an important ingredient in King's Hawaiian's products?

Honey adds a distinctive irresistible sweet taste that perfectly complements the wholesome wheat grains.
